Traveling Chic

08 . 11 . 12

My flight on Friday was cancelled “due to weather” by the fine folks at USAirways so I’m flying home on Saturday now.  On the bright side, the extra day gave me time to get some work off my plate and take a photo of my travel ensemble.  It was inspired by Charlize Theron’s outfit in […]

Traveling in Style

08 . 10 . 12

I’m off to visit my family in Pennsylvania for a little R&R.  Of course, that got me thinking about the state of fashion, or lack there of, at the airport.  It’s rare to see someone who looks nice which is sad. People traveled for hundreds if not thousands of years without wearing sweatpants and I […]

Pretty in Provence

08 . 09 . 12

When Janet and Gilbert de Botton set about finding a house in the South of France, they finally settled on a 1,000 acre bull farm in Provence.  From it, they created, along with decorator and landscape architect Jean-Louis Raynaud and his partner Kenyon Kramer, “one of the great contemporary estates of our time.” Jacob Rothschild […]

The January in Fashion

08 . 09 . 12

“September is the January in fashion.” – Candy Pratts Price I love quoting that line from The September Issue because it’s so true.  The September issues have already started to arrive and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Vogue.  At 916 pages, it really will be their biggest issue ever! Woo […]

This is my last Jacques Grange post.  I swear.  But I couldn’t post about his guest houses in Portugal without sharing the one that he actually uses while on holiday. This one is definitely my favorite and the day bed is going in my beach house folder immediately. It’s perfection.

On Holiday: Part Deux

08 . 08 . 12

If yesterday’s guest house on Jacques Grange’s property wasn’t your style, maybe this one will be more to your liking.  I love all the fabulous striped cotton rugs and textiles. But I probably wouldn’t even see them because I’d be sitting outside on one of the chic rattan chairs all day.  A girl can dream.

On Holiday

08 . 07 . 12

“Every man who possibly can should force himself to a holiday of a full month in a year, whether he feels like taking it or not.” – William James  August is when most Europeans take a month long holiday. I envy them and vow each year to do the same.  It hasn’t quite happened yet […]

One New Yorker who many have admired over the years is Diana Vreeland.  You might remember my post on the book about her life and career, The Eye has to Travel.  It was written by Lisa Immordino Vreeland who is married to Diana’s grandson, Alexander Vreeland.  Since she is part of the family, Lisa was […]

Beautiful Catastrophe

08 . 06 . 12

“A hundred times have I thought New York is a catastrophe and 50 times:  It is a beautiful catastrophe.”- Le Corbusier Today, August 6, 2012, marks my 11th anniversary in New York.  As I look back, at the good times and the bad, I think “beautiful catastrophe” sums up what it’s like to live in […]

Wherever you go…

Les Choses de la Vie

08 . 03 . 12

I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a rainy night in New York this week than with a vintage French film.  Les Choses de la Vie (The Things of Life) from 1970 is part of a series saluting director Claude Sautet a the Film Center Lincoln Center.  It stars Romy Schneider as Helen, […]

Getting to Know Brizo

08 . 02 . 12

Most people turn on the faucet in their home without even thinking about how much work went into creating it. I had the opportunity to interview Brizo designer Celine Kwok at the ELLE DECOR Modern Life Concept House recently.  As we walked around the house that included Brizo faucets and hardware, we discussed how she […]

Neutrality

08 . 02 . 12

I challenged myself to wear more color this summer because that’s what every magazine and fashion blogger was touting.  The problem was that every time I did wear color, I wished I was wearing neutrals.  Sometimes you just have to stick with what works for you whether it’s fashion or decor related.  I’ve described my […]

August

08 . 01 . 12

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its tuning.  The weeks that come before are only a climb from the balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of […]

It was fun watching the photo shoot with Nacho Figueras for Lifestyle Mirror and even more fun seeing which shots made the final cut.  It also never occurred to me that photographer Candy Kennedy (that’s her photo above) would shoot him in black and white.  It was a grey day in the Hamptons so it […]

Two weeks ago, I was asked by Lifestyle Mirror magazine if I would like to come along on a cover shoot to the Hamptons.  The best part was that it was for polo player Nacho Figueras. The morning of the shoot, I boarded a van with the crew of eight for the drive out to […]

Twinsies

07 . 30 . 12

I think every weekend house should include a guest room with twin beds.  They’re perfect for kids and also adults who need to share a room but I also love how they look.  While this room was designed by Tammy Connor for the Hamptons Designer Show House but it would look just as good in any […]
