Three Outfits Inspired by Rene Russo in A Thomas Crown Affair
I promised my followers I’d write a post on the fashion of film The Thomas Crown Affair so I put these three outfits together with chic pieces from Saks to get you started. They have so many great brands at a wide range of price points so there is something for everyone.
Rene Russo as Catherine Banning wore a lot of knit separates and great coats in the film designed by Michael Kors for Celine in 1998. I decided to base every outfit on a sweater dress since they are so cozy and comfortable. That means they are perfect for those of you who are required to go back to the office full time.
The Toteme Open-Front Wool Coat looks very similar to the one Rene Russo wears in the film. The Prozena Schouler Eden Merino Wool-Blend Pleated Midi-Dress dress looks black but it’s actually navy. The tan Bernardo Milano Knee-High Pointed Toe Boots have a great block heel for walking to work. I’ve been liking more color for this fall and winter like this Tory Burch Lee Radziwill Crocodile-Embossed Leather Bag in celadon. This is actually one of my favorite colors. The Freya Begonia Wool Flat-Brimmed Fedora is perfect for all the cold but sunny days we’ve been having lately. For dry winter skin, try the The Rejuvenating Night Cream from La Mer.
Originally, I had the dresses paired with different coats but in the film she wears a lot of tone on tone outfits. You could definitely mix and match any of these coats and dresses to create the perfect outfit for you or to mix things up for the work week.
In this outfit, we’re not literally replicating it since it’s hard to find that specific color but using it as inspiration for this Elie Tahari Ashley Cashmere V-Neck Sweaterdress topped with the garnet colored Mackage Belted Light Wool Coat. For accessories, I’d pair black Staud Wally Suede Knee-High Boots and black Loro Piana Jasmine Rabbit Hair Felt Pillbox Hat. As for a handbag, I’d go out on a limb and add Simkhai Aria Leopard Calfhair Mini Bag for a fun pop of pattern. Add a pop of color to your eyes too with the Gucci Palette de Beauté Quatuor Eyeshadow Palette.
I love wearing grey in the colder months so I had to include a grey outfit only slightly inspired by the grey ensemble she wears in the film.
I’d start with the long grey Toteme Cable-Knit Wool Maxi Sweaterdress. I’ve had knit dresses and skirts hemmed by my tailor in case you think it looks too long. I also love patterned coats with solid colored outfits so I’d top it with this Long Grey Checked Coat. You could obviously add black boots but why not try something different like these cream colored Stuart Weitzman Naomi Lacquered Leather Boots. The Passementerie Leather Bag is from a hot new brand Destree that should be on your radar. Rene Russo wears gloves throughout the film but that was in 1999 before mobile phones became ubiquitous so instead, I added hats like this Hat Attack Ruby Wool Fedora to her outfits. You can finish off all three outfits with the Limited Edition Dior Forever Liquid Sequin Lipstick.
I hope these three outfits from Saks let you channel your inner Catherine Banning.
XOXO,
HC
