When I was in Miami for Art Basel in December 2014, my friend and I drove up to Bar Harbor. Along the way, we passed a huge construction site for the Surf Club. My friend who I was with actually remarked that he owned a book Surf Club about the old club by Assouline. Well, the renovation is finally complete and the new Four Seasons Surf Club has finally opened to much fanfare.
The Four Seasons Surf Club has kept the original Mediterranean clubhouse built by Harvey Firestone in 1930 that was frequented by celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and Winston Churchill. Large glass 77 room hotel and residence towers by architect Richard Meier with interiors by French designer Joseph Dirand now flank the main building.
Joseph Dirand describes his guest room and cabana designs as “glamorous and naughty” with shades of mint green, ice blue and white that reflect the ocean and palm trees outside.
If that isn’t enough, Le Sirenuse owner Antonio Sersale has opened his first restaurant outside of Positano in the Four Seasons Surf Club. Thomas Keller of The French Laundry in California and Per Se in New York will also open a restaurant within the grounds, designed by Martin Brudnizki.
I guess I should make a reservation for Art Basel 2017 now.
