Happiness
by habituallychic
01 . 27 . 10I was catching up on my fashion magazines while I was at the hair salon last night and I kept noticing articles about happiness. This has been a been a big topic of conversation among my friends this year since we all believe that having a positive attitude is the key to happiness and also success! We’ve all heard that money can’t buy happiness, although it might you dress better while trying to be happy, so I was trying to think of the things that make me happy that don’t cost any money. One of the main things I came up with is sunshine. There is nothing I love more than feeling the warm sun on my face. I’ve even been known to cross the road to walk on the sunny side of the street. There is something about dog walkers that make me happy. Well, not the actual walkers, but all those cute little dogs strolling down the street together always make me smile. So tell me, what makes you happy?

Chocolate!
You are right, money will not provide you with happiness. It may remove a certain amount of stress, depending on what is necessary to obtain the money.
I would have to say, as cliched as it is, my boyfriend provides me with much happiness. And anything with melted cheese.
The beach, the song Tonight’s Gonna be a Good Night by the Black Eyed Peas, a great find at Brimfield, baking, chocolate, St. Germain liquor on ice, flowers…..
A clean kitchen.
Good friends, good books, good chocolate … a beautiful picture … and of course, my sweet little darlings!
The feeling that you get when you’ve done the best that you can with the situation you’re in. So perhaps for me, being content is really happiness?
This is going to seem totally random….I have 2 dogs that I walk every morning. At the beginning of the walk I’m always in a bad mood because it’s early or cold or I’m tired or whatever the case happens to be that day….but….my dogs do the most adorable thing where they bump into each other to get ahead of the other one to be the first to get to the “good smells.” Seeing their two little bodies bumbling down the street bumping into one another, so happy to be outside….I’m such a sucker for it and totally happy by the end of every walk!
my children!!!
Laughing. I know it sounds like a “duh” no brainer, but as I laughed with my husband on the couch last night, I thought “dang, I’m pretty happy.” Definitely the little things right? 🙂
My daughter Olivia, and my old convertible. A smile from a stranger (a genuine one).
🙂 Lots of love all

I love this post – it’s nice to stop and think about this question. Here’s my answer:
the beach
dogs, even though I don’t own one at the time, every time I see one I smile…
a dinner table full of friends
Great post! Let’s see, the smell of the desert after a good rain, orange blossoms in the summer, a great patio, my husband’s laugh, my best friend’s jokes, my grandfather’s art…oh man, this could get really long.
Oh dear…where do I begin?! New magazines in the mailbox make me oh so very happy. My pug’s snoring. My fiance’s nerdy jokes. Traveling to new places. Sunshine (me too!). And…dessert. Oh and last but not least, this sweet topic.

So right you are, sunshine, fresh air, my family, friends and my faith and hope in another day.
I love freshly brewed coffee or tea, walks, my dog, my artwork and the happiness that a child shows with reckless abandon.
Beautiful things make me happy too.
You always have habitually chic and pretty things here.

Me again,
the 5 senses, taste, sight, sound, touch and smell make me happy – as long as they are all good.
pve
hydrangeas (or any type of flowers), huge snowflakes falling slowly, having someone do something for you completely unexpected, working hard, feeling loved all make me happy
What makes me happy?….Hmm. Jesus Christ, who died to erase each tear that’s touched my face, my boxer, Layla, babies, fresh magazines, a man sensitive enough to cry, and laughing till my abs are sore:)
Thank you for this post! It’s been a difficult day, so getting the chance to stop and reflect on the things that make me smile…truly did just that…made me smile. Here’s my list:
*my pup frankie…he’s been with the “grandparents” for a few weeks while I prepare to move, and I finally get to see him on Saturday. But his silly, boston-terrier esque face make me smile everytime!
*Greasy spoons on a Saturday /Sunday morning
*game nights with the girls
*reading wedding magazines & blogs with the morning coffee
*travelling
*LAUGHTER
*dream of all that is to come in my life!
Thank you for reminding me how grateful I really am!
i absolutely LOVE this post and had to leave a comment: for me, it’s walking down 5th Avenue with my BF on my arm (morning or night), it always makes me smile.
Well….if security is what you love then indeed money does buy happiness. I know that’s an unpopular opinion but in my case money is the prime happiness maker. As long as that’s in place I can enjoy all the little things like sleeping in late, good scotch, a perfectly cooked roast, good books, etc.
Walking on Jones Street here in Savannah. The alley behind River Street. Going into apartments i haven’t been in before, and surprise! great decor with very little cash. And of course, sharing a joke and feeling loved.
My children, and success make me happy.
Sunshine is such a great way to increase one’s happiness, I agree.
Taking my dogs on a walk and watching their mood becoming even brighter.
good news of any kind
an unexpected, genuine compliment
the hope of what is yet to come
Great idea Heather. I enjoyed reading everyone’s posts. I hope the rest of your week goes well.
Love the idea behind this post.
Where to begin? I’ve been longing for summer lately — open windows, a warm breeze at sundown, gelato, waves washing over my toes, bonfires, barbeques, fireworks over water, anything coconut-scented, sunflowers…
Red and White make me happy. Target, a can of coke, Valentine’s Day, red geraniums, red lip stick, red gingham table cloths . . .
Oh, and my pillow top mattress with my plumeau (down comforter)!! There are times I squeal with joy when I climb under my plumeau!
I agree with others – laughter is like a mini-vacation!
🙂
NYC, DK Travel Guides, Diptyque candles, bubble baths, magazines, tea, a crackling fire, fresh white sheets on a fluffy bed, a vase full of peonies, The Food Network, champagne and a great dinner party.
Creating art, chocolates, a glass of fine wine. my home my grandchildren and my Himalayan Miss Belle!!

Leaving from work on Friday!

Seeing my man smiling!

For me Happiness is everywhere, and people who know that are Happy people!
A compliment 🙂

I wish I could record the frogs! they sound like they are enormous! they are tiny!
they make incredible music!
all night!
And in the morning…….there are (today) 22 mallards who meet me at the pond. They hatched here……I know that because they know me. I start walking toward the pond….and they all swim over to me…..”here she is…..and she gives us food!”!
When it was raining…….I went to the pond with an umbrella…….they all flew away! They didn’t know me…..and I scared them!!
So WHEN IT RAINS I just wear a hat or something.
My heart sings when I see these ducks!

A day that makes me happy is a day that I can spend walking around Boston and shopping, having a nice lunch and just people watching.

my niece’s face and of course a hug from her;
my family and friends;

pretty rugs; and french fries, salad and a glass of champagne! thanks for reminding us about the “happy” stuff.
best to you.
I’m sure you have heard of this book, but on the slight chance you haven’t I thought I would comment and suggest it. It’s called The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. She spends a year doing things to make herself happier. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far it’s good.
P.S. La-la-love your blog!
xoxo SP

1.With you on the sunshine.
2. A creative achievement.
3. Laughter.
4. A filthy dirty joke!
5. The lovable rediculousness of olympic ice skating – at first I watch to half-mock it, then I’m genuinely moved to tears when they nail that performance. I seriously geek out.
6. Riding my old italian bicycle in the city.
GREAT POST
Tiramisu and Espresso Martini make me happy anytime.
When I make someone else happy, it gives me great joY!!!!!
Wow Heather! You certainly touched a lot of us with this simple post. It made me happy reading your post and the comments… and yes, chocolate, fresh flowers, time with friends, family and my art!
So many things make me happy–first to mind: Jones (huge poodle) sleeping w/ his head on my feet; great clients; great buys as I know they are gifts; wonderful moments of deep connection with my friends and family; early, early mornings in my garden; remembering to be grateful. Thanks for making me think. Mary
Free & Fabulous: HUGS!!!
Wonderful topic; how lovely to dwell on the joyful instead of the miserable. Too many to list here but they’d include: eating in the garden on a warm summer evening; pink peonies; wood fire in my hearth; my kitten purring; fresh snow.
