Sleek Teak

I was looking for photos of this Richard Meier designed beach house months ago and was surprised that there were no images on Google. The home was designed for Peter Morton the ridiculously wealthy head of Morton’s Restaurant Group which owns the Hard Rock Cafe among others. His son Harry made headlines when he dated Lindsay Lohan a few years ago. But I digress. The house was published in the October 2006 issue of W Magazine and have the tear sheets somewhere but couldn’t find them either so I was happy to find the photos on the W website. It’s not exactly my style but I think that the teak exterior is beyond gorgeous.

I was also surprised to learn that Michael Smith had designed the spare African inspired interiors which highlight the art collection which includes the Brice Marden painting above.
The house glows at night when the shutters are opened.

The interior walls are “cast-in-place” concrete and interesting choice for a beach house. While the lap pool makes it look like you could swim all the way to the ocean. I hope one of the remaining shelter magazines can get us another look inside this interesting home because I’d love to see more of the interiors behind the sleek teak exterior.

I think that this just shows what great of designer MS really is! A great designer can do design of all types and doesn’t always have “a look”.
    Happy Sunday!

This is my future home, haha. I’m very inspired by those small wall dividers in the house.

LOVE it! I wonder if the teak weathers well or if it fades… The lap pool is awesome!

I adore this…and it is nice to see Meier work with something other than glass! I am really loving this whole shutters phenomenon that seems to be sweeping the nation as well. And I certainly did not realize that Michael Smith could do modern minimalist so well! I agree with Grant, this really showcases how deep his talent is.

This was my favourite beach house on the whole Malibu strip. We visited LA from Australia 18 months ago. It was at the time the son had just started dating Lindsay. All the paparazzi were on the beach with their telephoto lenses trained on the house. We asked who they were spying on. Miss Lohan and her new beau were in.

The house’s deck railings were draped in Hermes beach towels to give them some privacy from the cameras. The music was blaring.

I’d take the house, but give the fame a big miss.

The outside of the house is fabulous, the teak is beyond beautiful, but the interior looks like a back stairwell of a hospital- all in cement. Very cold. If that is the “ideal Modern” then I’ll stick with cozy Traditional. To me the perfect Modern is Kelly Klein’s New York apartment.

While this is an amazing home – one of my favorite in Malibu…

I have to say that a Richard Meier house in teak comes across as VERY Ray Kappe.

    That is a good thing.
