Bachelor Pad Update: Making Progress

by habituallychic

06 . 17 . 08

We’re starting to make some progress on the Bachelor Pad. The painting was finished last week and now we’re onto buying furniture. While waiting for some of it to be delivered, I’ve been keeping busy with little projects including fixing up the bathroom. I bought new towels and accessories, took down a mis-placed towel bar, spackled, painted, hung some art, and generally made the room more visitor friendly.

Half of the time on this project, I feel like the decorator fairy. I come in while Bachelor Boy is at work or golfing and spruce things up and wonder whether he’ll notice the changes when he gets home. Meanwhile, realizing that he will have no idea how hard I worked or how exhausting it is to run around all over town looking for white lacquer Jonathan Adler bathroom accessories that are sold out everywhere! The other half of the time, I feel like I’m playing the lead in a Doris Day movie where we’re still in the bickering stage. (Bonus points if you can figure out which one!) Makes for some very interesting stories to say the least!

Next up, is ordering a fabulous Ralph Lauren dresser that is a major splurge (even with the 40% designer discount!), figuring out a new dining table option, and finding someone who doesn’t charge an arm and a leg to possibly fabricate a built-in looking console along the back wall of the dining area. A decorator’s work is never done!

I got to play the decorator fairy to a bachelorette… it is FUN! I loved getting screaming phone call of delight!
It’s good to hear you’re still at it… can’t wait to see photos!

Fifi Flowers, I would fall over if I got a screaming phone call of delight! He did call to say that he liked the French art poster I moved into the bathroom. Good enough!

Ah, Pillow Talk. The remote devises were an inspiration.

  4. Suzy June 17, 2008 | 4:56 am

Ha! I hope he is noticing – it’s all the little things that make the difference. Hang in there, can’t wait to see pics of it done!

Oh, and I meant to post a comment on your post a while back about feeling like you were born in the wrong era. I swear we must have been sisters in a past life (except for the cleaning part, for that I am grateful maid’s come cheap in Hong Kong)!

    love the pillow talk photo!

having designed for both bachelors and bachelorettes, i have to agree with fifi- the girls are much more fun! the screams of delight are very satisfying, indeed. i’m working on a “bachelorette” home right now, and her excitement about the project couldn’t make the process any more fun!

love the update… indeed guys don’t squeal like girls, but i think they are definitely easier to work with! agree? disagree? wondering which RL dresser you went with and what paint colors you chose? can’t wait to see the end product! I’ve shopped for bath accessories in NY, I feel your pain.

Alright, is this bachelor available for you, the perfect wife and cocktail hostess? I mean, how lucky can he be to have your touch!

Mrs. Blandings, I had a feeling you would know the movie. I guess in this case, I’m making the apartment better and not worse but I’m still dealing with the beginning of the movie issues if you know what I mean 😉

Suzy, I’m obsessed with details. He hasn’t yet mentioned the new salt and pepper shakers. I figured if I was going to have keep cleaning them off the coffee table, at least they could go with the decor!

I really hope you visit NYC soon so we can go shopping!

Maison21, while there are no screams, he is getting more into the project. His father checked the place out and was impressed. Then the two of them started making suggestions that started to make them sound like two gay decorators. It was pretty funny!

Erika, I think men are easier since they have no idea about anything and defer to your judgement 90% of the time. But it’s also harder in this case since we knew each other before.

I’m going to leave the RL dresser as a surprise since it’s beyond fabulous! I am also trying to see if any magazines are interested in publishing it so the big reveal might have to wait. Keep your fingers crossed!

PVE, He would be available if he was willing to give up his membership in the “girl of the week” club. Hence the reference to Pillow Talk. I’ll keep you posted. Miracles have been known to happen!

It’s pillow talk! I cheated because I detached the photo and it’s labeled as such. As for all your hard work…men don’t always notice the details but the end result will bowl him over I’m sure. Can’t wait to see it completed!

I love the updates on this project! (For the record, I preferred Send Me No Flowers – and did Doris have the cutest figure or what?!) I’m interested in your dining table option – is space is the issue?

I am also considering this one right now – my issue is an oddly shaped living area with two large bay windows. I love having so much natural light and I suppose I am being forced to go outside the box to make it work – that’s got to be a good thing!

  15. Habitually Chic June 17, 2008 | 1:39 pm

Marie Louise, I knew I should have labeled the photo differently! Good catch! I hope he and a few shelter magazines are bowled over!

Alice Olive, There is space galore in this apartment but his parent’s suggested that a round dining table is better for dinner party conversation. I’m not sure who, besides me, would be helping him throw a dinner party since he can’t cook and has no idea how to host a party.

My inspiration for the space is the dining room of Frederic Malle that was published in Men’s Vogue and that I posted a while back. He had a modern Knoll glass and chrome round table with antique chairs and Sean Yoo honeycomb bookcases pushed together to make a console/sideboard. I love that look. I’m trying to balance modern mid-century looking pieces with antiques so I’m researching specific options. I’ll keep you posted!

HC – fun, fun, fun…and it will all pay off!! Keep up the good work.

If you ever need quality architectural art – my 20 year-old son is a photographer – he sells his one-of-a-kind prints in large format.

As we know it is all about talent and networking!

    fame is lurking

  18. Habitually Chic June 17, 2008 | 3:29 pm

Susan, I was actually thinking about a large scale photography piece for above the sofa. Does your son have a website where I can check out his work?

  19. CB June 17, 2008 | 4:03 pm

Ms. Chic, I think we are talking about “Pillow Talk”, no? And I feel your pain regarding the totally-not-available white lacquer accessories from JA. I’ve been going nuts trying to find them myself. At any rate, I hope this project continues to go well and look forward to seeing the results!

  20. That Girl Designs June 17, 2008 | 4:42 pm

what a great project to have…i can’t wait to see the final results.

i have a thing for old, romantic movies. i just watched the courtship of eddie’s father and some of the interiors where amazing. i tried to find photo stills on-line, but no luck.

  21. Habitually Chic June 17, 2008 | 5:37 pm

CB, So weird that they are sold out everywhere. Only reason that I can think of is that people bought them up to decorate their summer beach rentals.

  22. Habitually Chic June 17, 2008 | 5:38 pm

That Girl Designs, Someone should create a website of old movie stills. I had a hard time finding any from Pillow Talk. I really wanted to post a photo from the apartment she designed but there aren’t any online!

  23. CB June 17, 2008 | 7:40 pm

Oh…I think you might be on to something there. Let’s hope they up production soon!
