What I’ve Bought So Far for Fall 2021

“September is the January of fashion” pronounced fashion editor Candy Pratts Price in the 2009 fashion documentary, The September Issue, and I have to agree. There is something about autumn that will always remind me of back to school shopping except now with much chicer styles. I always start my shopping early because that’s when there are the most options available. Before I begin, I always take another look to my favorite movies and television shows for inspiration. My favorite wardrobes belong to Gwyneth Paltrow in A Perfect Murder, Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show, Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair, and even Faye Dunaway in Network. They’re filled with beautiful blouses, great cashmere sweaters, and the most stylish coats.

I’ve posted this Double Face Wool Coat before but I wanted to include it in the context of everything else I’ve purchased for fall. It actually looks like a darker taupe in person and it’s the perfect shade for those who don’t look good in orangey camel tones. I sized up one size to allow for heavier sweaters underneath and I’m so glad I bought it in two colors.

I’ve never met a tie neck blouse I didn’t like and bought a few for fall including this Herringbone Georgette Tie-Neck Top. The key to wearing them that gives off a sexy 70s vibe is to never button the top buttons. It’s easier if you can find a v-neck style but if not, leave the top buttons open and tie the bow looser and lower.

J.Crew refuses to bring back the darker wash in my favorite Curvy Toothpick Jeans so I’ve been trying to find new options. These dark blue 10″ highest-rise skinny jean in signature stretch are a pretty great alternative. I never have my jeans hemmed any longer and will just cut them and apply some Fray Check to prevent them from over-fraying.

A lot of us are still walking everywhere in New York so I am always looking for chic sneakers. I just ordered these New Balance 720 Sneakers in two colors. I find NB to be more comfortable than Nike but I’ll buy whatever style has the best colors.

This Celine Triomphe Bag has been on my wish list for years. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet but it might be my fall treat to myself. It would be perfect for all my outfits in neutrals and greys.

After binging the original Gossip GIrl series and watching The Last Letter to Your Lover (it was terrible but thee fashions were good), I’m all in on berets this fall and winter. I think they look better when they are knit and more relaxed so I ordered this Taupe 100% Cashmere Beret Hat.

I’m so glad I bought the charcoal grey Double Face Wool Coat too. It honestly looks more expensive and will be a great transitional coat for fall and spring. I paired the coats with similar colored separates but I will also pair the taupe coat with my charcoal sweaters and pants and the charcoal coat over neutrals blouses and sweaters.

Tory Burch understands that tie neck blouses look better with a v-neck so I bought this Printed Chiffon Bow Blouse too. It looks more dusty blue in person which will a good contrast with my charcoal coats and pants.

I was trying to find longer grey trousers but decided to take a chance on these Cameron slim crop pants in Italian stretch wool. I bought my regular size and also a tall size. As someone who’s high waisted, I sometimes buy tall sizes so they sit higher up. I think I’m going to keep the tall pair and cut out the lining and then keep the lining in the regular size so I have two options for fall and winter. I have to get all my pants hemmed anyway so I’ll have them shortened to the slimmest part of my ankle.

I’m excited to have a charcoal grey pair of New Balance Sneakers to pair with my grey trousers this fall.

I love how Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Emily wears scarves tucked into sweaters in A Perfect Murder. I have a few Hermès silk scarves but I’ve been trolling eBay and Etsy for some new options for fall. This one just arrived and I can’t wait to wear it.

Here are two of the examples that inspired me to buy a few berets for fall and winter. I also bought the same beret as above in grey and I also bought a black one.

This Italian cotton-linen herringbone blazer comes in this blue shade which is actually darker in person and a tan color. Normally, I would go for the neutral but decided to take a chance on blue. It’s also thicker than I thought it would be so it could be worn in place a coat for those of you in temperate climates.

I don’t normally mix patterns but this Glen Plaid Georgette Tie-Neck Top works well under the Italian cotton-linen herringbone blazer above.

I have a few trips this fall which is another reason I wanted to get my fall wardrobe in order. I ordered these Edie full-length trouser in Italian stretch wool via eBay because they haven’t restocked them for fall yet.

I love wearing a longer wide leg pant with white sneakers like Phoebe Philo. I own a few pair from the French brand Zespa but Stan Smith work too.

I’ve already owned these two lip products but I recently realized that the Victoria Beckham Bitten Lip Tint in Chérie looks amazing with Westman Atelier Squeaky Clean Liquid Lip Balm in garconne layered on top. They create the perfect lip color together.

I’ve always loved taupe silk blouses like the one Jennifer Aniston wears in The Morning Show so I took a chance on this Silk patch pocket popover shirt in pale mocha. It will be perfect with jeans and black and charcoal pants.

My favorite black pants that I buy every fall are these High-rise Cameron pant in four-season stretch.

I already have the grey and natural colored shearling Birkenstocks and I just ordered the black Shearling Birkenstocks. I want to take them to my cobbler to have him paint the brown cork black so they will be fully black.

Of course, my new gold chain necklace will look perfect with the silk blouse.

For more casual walks in Central Park, I bought this Recycled Cashmere Hoodie from Naadam to wear under the taupe Double Face Wool Coat. In The Morning Show, Jennifer Aniston wears a cashmere hoodie under a trench coat and I’ve always thought about that look. Naadam also just launched new colors of their $75 Cashmere Sweater too.

Hope this helps you get started on your own fall looks.

Bon week-end!

XOXO,
