The temperature dipped into the 40’s this morning in New York. Perfect weather to cozy up by a fire. If you don’t have a fireplace, the next best thing is to burn a woodsy or warm smelling candle. The scents of sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, patchouli, and amber are perfect for the autumn season. Below are a few of my favorites to buy for yourself or to give as a lovely present.

I burn Diptyque Baises and Figuier in my apartment all year long but Diptyque Feu de Bois is billed as the “quintessential cool-weather scent.” It has “woodsy notes that evoke the smoky aromas of a crackling fire. Warm up on chilly nights with this earthy mix of burning embers and Lapsang Tea.”

Cire Trudon is known for their dark green glass candles but I love the light blue color of the Cire Trudon Joséphine Candle. While it composed of floral scents, they are “balanced with a warm and woody base of Indonesian Sandalwood and aromatic White Musk.”

Fornasetti candles are housed in the chicest vessels and the Malachite Candle is especially beautiful. The “hand-poured black wax opens with notes of Pine, Clary Sage and Galbanum, blended with a heart of Cedarwood and Patchouli and a Sandalwood, Amber base” which smells as good as it looks.

If you are a long time reader, you will remember that Buly 1803 is one of my favorite shops in Paris. Their beauty products look and smell beautiful and make the best gifts. I bought one of their signature candles as a hostess gift for someone when I lived in Paris and it made a great impression. The Généraux d’Empire’ Candle “balances sweet notes of Rose Petals, Blackcurrant and Rosemary with fresh Peppermint, Violet and Verbena to conjure the scent of “flowers and fruit spilling out of overturned baskets.” Smoky Cedar, Patchouli, Vetiver and Musk linger long after it has been extinguished.”

I love any candle that comes in a container that can be used long after the wax has burned away. Joya makes the most gorgeous ceramic vessels and the green Foxglove Candle is the one I’m adding to my apartment this autumn even if the scent sounds a little springy.

The black Joya Composition No.6 candle is super chic and sounds more appropriate for cooler temperatures.  It opens “with tangy Juniper and Grapefruit, the scented wax is blended with notes of Lotus Leaf and layered with grassy Cedarwood, Vetiver and Amber.”

I buy a Byredo candle every time I visit Paris and the Byredo Bibliothèque Candle is perfect for burning while you curl up and read a book. It “fills your living space with a wonderfully rich scent, reminiscent of ancient, wood-paneled libraries. The brand’s signature black wax first emanates fruity Peach and Plum top notes, springing to floral Violet and Peony before anchoring with a hearty Patchouli, Leather and Vanilla-blend.”

I bought this Ginsberg is God Candle by Bella Freud in London at the time of its release and was heartbroken when it smashed on my bathroom floor. The natural wax candle is “defined by notes of Fig Leaf, Vine Leaves and Tomato. Frankincense, Wormwood and Leather add depth.”

There is also a four set of Bella Freud Mini Votive Candles so you can try all the scents.

I didn’t know that Burberry made candles but this Burberry Black Amber Candle is instilled with notes of Vanilla, Patchouli and White Musk, Black Amber perfect for fall.

I can’t think of a chicer gift for a fashionista than this Extravagance Russe Candle by Diana Vreeland Parfums. “It is inspired by the famed editor’s passion for the Far East. Housed in an attractive hand-blown glass vessel, it has a heady fragrance layered with notes of intoxicating Vanilla Bourbon, musky Amber and sweet Resins and Balsams”

Aerin has redesigned her candles and they now come on beautiful vessels that would make a great vase for flowers after the candle is finished. The Aerin Buckhorn Amber Candle will instantly transport you to the “Aspen ski lodge after which it’s named. This scent is designed to conjure the fresh air, open sky and snow-covered pines that line the Colorado mountain range.”

I’ve been wearing Le Labo Perfume for years and I love that I can burn the same scent in my apartment in the form of the Santal 26 Candle. It is described as an “aristocratic scent, at once gentle, smoky and leathery, that will fill your space and give it true personality. Come on baby light my fire.”
