Chic Style Icon: Tory Burch

The label style icon gets bandied about a lot but it’s usually only reserved for stylish ladies who are no longer with us such as Jackie Kennedy, Babe Paley, Slim Keith and the Duchess of Windsor. I was thinking recently about who would be considered modern day style icons. I decided that all celebrities would be excluded since they only look good when they have a style SWAT team dressing them for the red carpet. I also feel that anyone who’s ever slipped their feet into Uggs should automatically be excluded from the list. It seems that most of the women that I could think of lived in New York and would be considered socialites. Maybe they are so stylish because they grew up with stylish parents. One of the ladies who is the top of my style icon list is Tory Burch. She mentions all the time how her fashion label was inspired by the chic outfits her parents wore in the 1960’s and it’s clear that their style rubbed off on her.

She wears a wide variety of designers but she always looks like herself and never like she’s wearing a costume. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wear the same thing twice but I’m sure she does but just changes it with different jewelry and accessories so no one notices. Ever since she started dating record label CEO Lyor Cohen, her style has become a little more downtown and less uptown ladies who lunch. It’s been fun to watch her style evolve. And don’t even get me started on her hair! If anyone knows what products she uses to achieve that shine, please let me know! She’s inspiring from head to toe and definitely gets my vote for style icon status!

Yes! I love Tory Burch’s style as well. I also really like Sylvana Soto-Ward, the Special Events editor at Vogue. She has that same effortless chic look.

Great post, totally chic. I love how she often wears safron – not an easy color to pull off.

Love Tory Burch’s style, but what I admire most about her fashion & accessories line is that the prices are so reasonable compared to other designers with whom she shares store shelves. It’s like she was the only one that got the memo.

She is so stylish. I agree…how does she get her hair to look like that!?

  8. Amy February 19, 2010 | 5:02 pm

I couldn’t agree more– I love her style, and her clothing.

Love Tory Burch! Great images you’ve found of her! Would kill for everything she creates!

She is incredibly stylish. I would have to add that I view the Tory Burch flats in the same manner which you view UGGs but it’s just the ubiquity of them. I’m never a fan of wearing something because EVERYBODY else happens to be wearing them. I’d rather have something completely different.

And you know Tory must be a tiny woman as she’s dwarfed by Rachel Zoe!!

She is gorgeous. So elegant and so classy… Trendy and still feminine!:) Nice post!

Tory Burch is great! I also like Dylan Lauren and Ivanka Trump.

  13. The Redhead and her Pooch Lola February 19, 2010 | 5:27 pm

What I would do to go rummaging through her closet! I can only imagine what it is like…

What I like is that she uses color blocking and interesting necklines to draw the eye up toward her face. She does a great job of dressing to accentuate her figure–and that never goes out of style.

You hit the nail on the head… she really does always look like herself…she seems to be quite comfortable in her own skin. I love that air of confidence… Each photo/outfit is better than the next..she just never misses!

    Happy Weekend!

Definitely a style icon! I love that her clothes are always classic yet have a touch of creativity—a bold necklace, a bright color, a wild print. Saving these these to my “dream wardrobe” folder pronto! XO

And don’t forget her spectacular apartment, decorated by Daniel Romauldez. Beyond uber-chic.

  24. Savage Rose February 20, 2010 | 5:05 pm

Tory is the “IT” girl in my book!
What ease of style and class.

Your elimination criteria are great…I guess it leaves chic executives. I’ve always loved Aerin Lauder, though she’s been off the radar for some time. Michelle Obama has set off a high-low style revolution. And though I’m not a print person I appreciate Margherita Missoni’s style.

  26. Decorno February 21, 2010 | 3:36 am

I admire Tory for her enterprising nature; she seems like a lovely person. But don’t think I wouldn’t shiv Tory and throw her in a car trunk in order to step on on that hot Lyor Cohen action.

    Because I would.

  27. COCOCOZY February 21, 2010 | 4:43 am

Tory Burch has great style! Smart business woman too!
