Let’s Hear it for the Boys

I have a lot of male readers and I didn’t want them to feel left out of the closet cleaning inspiration! The thing that I love best about the men’s closets are how great all the shirts and jackets look lined up. Women’s clothing tends to be all different styles and sizes and they never quite look this perfect! Enjoy!

I had the opportunity to see Steven Gambrel‘s closet in person last year and I can attest that it’s pretty darn fabulous! He has shelves at the very top that hold his suitcases that would be a great idea to steal! The ceiling is also papered! So chic!

One of my all time favorite apartments belonged to interior designer Todd Romano and his closet is very well organized. He just sold this apartment so I can’t wait to see what the new one looks like!

This bespoke looking closet belongs to fashion designer Ralph Lauren. I think I see his signature denim hanging in it too!

I also got to see the dressing room belonging to David Jimenez when I stayed at his house in Kansas City and it too is beyond fabulous. But then again, there isn’t anything that David does that isn’t fabulous!

I love artwork and if you have a closet that allows for it, why not prop it up on the shelf or hang it on the wall. I posted about this closet in November 2008 and it’s still one of my all time favorite rooms. And thankfully, my readers let me know that it belongs to Belgian architect Vincent van Duysen. Just goes to show that not all Belgian design involves linen slipcovers!

This cute closet was one of my inspirations for the Bachelor’s apartment and it’s also still one of my favorites. Stefan at Architect Design just posted the rest of the apartment that was published in Metropolitan Home. May it rest in peace!

This closet was published in Domino and I feel like I should know who it belongs to but for the life of me, I can’t remember so if anyone else does, let me know! Regardless, it makes me jealous that’s it’s so well organized!

Steven Gambrel is the master of detail and for the closet of one of his clients, he painted it dark and studded the trim. I bow down to the master over this one!

I wish I had a better photo of this closet that was and might possibly still be owned by Italian businessman Piers Guerci and was published in New York magazine in 2005. The elegance of this closet still haunts me! To see more, click here.

I’m loving the blue closets and Nate Berkus painted his in a lovely shade!

Then there is the red closet that color loving Miles Redd designed for one of his clients. Why not paint your closet a cheerful color that makes getting dressed in the morning a joy!

I don’t know why it’s easier to organize the closet of another but I loved changing all the Bachelor’s hangers to matching wood. Now I just have to make mine look this good!

Bill Blass had a lovely closet too; was it ever photographed? I cannot remember but his shoes were lined up underneath his suits. I remember he had several pairs of ghillie brogues, which I coveted.

I agree; men’s closets always look far better than women’s because of the uniformity of their attire. However, the closet of Vincent van Duysen looks quite fantastic and one that could comfortably be either a men’s or women’s space.

    HC,

Thanks for remembering us – these pictures are indeed inspiring. Thanks to you, I replaced my wire hangers with wooden ones a couple years ago. This year I’ll try to prune even more items (particularly dress shirts) and put things back on shelves IN THEIR PLACE.

In particular, my big resolution this year is to only purchase items that (a) I love and (b) I’ll really wear a good deal. Those that don’t meet these criteria will find a home at goodwill at some point in 2010.

Thanks again – have a great year.

What a great compilation of images… I hope one day my closet will be worthy of being in your round-up 🙂

    Hi Heather,
Love your blog, I think if I’m not mistaken that the unknown man’s closet belongs to Anthony Todd in NY.
    Happy New Year to you.

Great selection of photographs. I’m always amazed at the attention to detail in your blog and just a bit jealous of all the people you get to meet.

the gambrel closet with the studs is awesome, and yes- i wholeheartedly agree: much easier to organize the closet of a client than my own! of course that probably has something to do with the fact that i’m being *paid* to do it, and also when organizing a client’s closet i don’t get depressed by the fact that i only like half a dozen pieces in teh whole thing!

thanks for the inspiration though, i’ll be adding “organize closet” to my never-ending list of tasks to work on around the house!

You missed the beautiful closet of Michael Smith.. Myself, I am stuck with a tiny closet but I can dream. I do love looking into peoples closets…is it sick?

What a terrific post, Heather! I’m absolutely nuts about closets, costumes, and organization. I love, love, LOVE the closet belonging to Vincent van Duysen!

Love the idea of hanging art in a closet as nice as these. How amusing it would be to dress in front of something that mirrors or sparks creativity? I could go for that every morning!

What a wonderful post!! Here, here to the boy’s. Their closets look more like a piece of art.

Heather, My husband always wonders how many blue shirts one man can possibly own – It seems that every time I go shopping for him, I come home with one and they really do look good on him.

Now I will have the Bachelor’s closet to attest to the fact that a man can never have too many blue shirts! AND that there is another man out there also with his shirts on matching wooden hangers! I’m constantly fighting the infestation of wire hangers in his closet…

Love this post and especially the Belgian architect’s closet! Stunning. I really like the masculine look for this and if I ever get to the point of achieving my dream and having a walk in wardrobe I would definitely want it to be more masculine than feminine. Perhaps you should do a blog on Savile Row interiors too? The modern Norton and Sons, the fire in Kilgour and then some of the more traditional outfitters too.
