Chic City Living
by habituallychic
11 . 18 . 09While there may be a dearth of American Shelter magazines, the foreign options just keep getting better and better. I was very excited to receive my new subscription to Canadian House & Home magazine this week and also to see Thomas Smyth’s home featured in their City Living section. If you happen to watch Design, Inc. on HGTV, then you might have seen Thomas who is one of Sarah Richardson‘s design assistants. He is is a hoot and his home is a great mix of interesting art and found treasures. I wish there more high caliber design shows like Design, Inc. and Divine Design on HGTV! If you haven’t picked up Canadian House & Home yet, I highly recommend you do so you can see more of this chic city home!

Wonderful to see you mention our Canadian House & home. It is a fabulous magazine that mey help to ease the shelter-mag withdrawal many may be feeling on your side of the border (and you do have that US dollar benefit to buying in Canada). The new editor is doing a spectacular job.
Thank you for posting something so Canadian! I love Design Inc. – it’s one of my favourite shows. Love his home!
oh, MY! you had me with that first photo. the fabric on the chairs is divine!! it all has that americana look with european style – SO fresh! i must start subscribing to that mag so i can fill the void 🙂
Ummmm this apartment is pretty much AMAZING. Am showing it to my bachelor client tonight. He needs a that cocktail tray and a spotted chair pronto.
XXX Kate
So Ralph Laurenish 🙂
I love your blog! I’ve never seen a blog about decoration and life style, and this is so cool!
Kisses from Spain! 😉
I love Canadian House and Home. I’d have to say that over the past year, since the new editor in chief Suzanne Dimma came on board – it’s definitely gotten a fresh makeover. It feels younger and more stylish than it did before..I look forward to getting it every month. (Suzanne Dimma previously hosted a design show called…The Style Dept.)
Yay for a Canadian mag! 🙂
Happy to see a Canadian mag mentioned on such a noteworthy blog!
Ohhhh Heather, I too so wish that hgtv would put more shows on like D.D.! They introduced Design, Inc two years ago and I fell in love with that show. Then, inexplicably it wasn’t available in my area (Washington state). I was really bummed. My hope would be that they get someone in there to shake things up a bit. They really can’t seem to get it figured out that we are done with all the Design on a dimes, the real estate shows and all the cutting in and out with canned commentary. What a waste.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED Design Inc. AND Room Service. Those shows were so amazing, because they really showcased the true art of design, versus the hokey American HGTV shows that like to try mixing “decorating” with home-made hobby projects. Thanks so much for sharing this. I can’t wait to pic up the mag!
I love Design, Inc.!! But I thought they had cancelled the show because it disappeared from its time slot and they don’t advertise the time. Doesn’t Sarah Richardson also have home furnishings line now?

Great post. Guess I have got to get a subscription to Canadian House and Home. Surely it has gotten better in the last two years. I lived in Toronto for a year before returning home to the states. I was usually less than excited to pick up Canadian magazines in the Toronto markets. The tables may have flipped. These photos make me want to give the publication a try.
There is nothing I don’t love about Smyth’s style. Thanks for sharing.
If you have a chance, catch “Sarah’s House”, Sarah’s more recent show. Three seasons have been broadcast in Toronto. Sarah and Tommy tackle top to bottom gut renovations of a house. Each episode is another room in the house. Sarah is our Canadian design star! Her color work is amazing and she can do everything from traditional to contemporary. Tommy has a great neo-traditionalist aesthetic. Thanks for the great white north shout-out Heather!
Thanks for sharing Heather, I fully agree in regards to HGTV. The difference between Design Inc and the HGTV shows you were speaking of is….people spend actual money on the Design Inc projects and are not trying to turn a paint can into a wastebasket with a glue gun and some grosgrain ribbon, lol. Seriously, Americans, and I am one, frequently have such a lack of respect for quality and often prefer quantity. Ugh…
Best,
Jaime
We love Canadian House & Home too! They certainly are on a mission to improve and become one of the go to magazines in North America! Hickory Chair will be featured in some upcoming issues so stay tuned…

Looking at that first photo, I’m thrilled I’m already a CH&H subscriber! Can’t wait. xoxo
Love this post!! Thomas is indeed a very talented
designer. Simple eleagance meets Ralph Lauren , and
a “touch of whimsey!!” I am placing an order for the
magazine now! Thank you.
Divine Design is probably my favorite HGTV show. I love everything Candice Olson does.
What a fabulously chic room. I sooo love this!
Does anyone know the name of the fabric or where to find it? I’ve been trying to hunt it down….
I absolutely love CH&H…they always have such amazing interior photographs! I am in love with this modernized wing chair and the wall color in the bedroom. The color in the bedroom just makes me want to curl up and flip through a magazine in bed…the ultimate relaxation! I really enjoy reading your blog and please swing by mine and take a look at my recent posts!

Love Tommy, great to see he moved into a bigger place…he is a real hoot and a wonderful designer.
If anyone can catch Sarah’s House or Sarah’s Cottage, you will understand the greatness that is our Tommy! You might find them still on line at hgtv.ca
Canadian House and Home and Style at Home are our Canadian Mag’s and they are wonderful and worth the money!
Even though I live in LA, I have been a long time fan of both the big Canadian home decorating mags- so much so that every time I am in Vancouver, I make sure to have enough Can cash left over to buy both House & Home and Style at Home at the airport. Besides House Beautiful, they are the only shelter mags that I find complimentary to my lifestyle and design sensibilities- no 4000 sq ft NY penthouse spreads for me. Just wanted to let you all know that you can get House & Home online now (as a digital mag)- it costs $ unlike the new Lonny but it might be worth it.

LOVe him and love his pad even more.
So happy you posted this very fabulous spread! I actually work with Tommy (& Sarah) and assisted him with this photoshoot. He is an absolute pleasure to work with and a brillant designer. Check out that ball finge – genius.
Great living room! I’ve been hearing so much about this magazine lately. Thanks for posting pics.
So happy and amazed that Tommy’s article is on this blog! I work with him, and he definitely deserves the credit and props, hes amazing!
This is a great post!! Was just scanning through it, but the flag-inspired pillow caught my eye and HAD to read it all!!

I love Canadian House & Home. I ended up ordering it about six months ago and look forward to reading it monthly. I miss Domino so much! This one is so refreshing. I loved the living room from your post and the pillows. I’m dying to design a man’s house because it uses all the elements and colors, I don’t normally use for myself and I think it would be so much fun. Love the post.
