Spain…On the Road Again

I’ve been hearing about Gwyneth Paltrow’s trip to Spain with Mario Batali for a while and now it will finally air on PBS this September as Spain…On the Road Again. Along for the ride are food writer Mark Bittman an Spanish actress Claudia Bassols. Turns out that Gwyneth lived in Spain with an exchange family and of course speak fluent Spanish. Is there nothing she can’t do?! I’m definitely going to be watching to find out!

Great video! Makes me wish I were on that trip! I bet Gwyneth makes it all the way through without gaining a single kilo!

Marie Louise – Or maybe she did and that’s why she’s been working out with her trainer for three hours a day! Ha!

I loathe that woman but, yes, she does actually speak quite decent Spanish. Which of course makes me hate her even more! When I lived in Paris with a surly French family, I put on 5 lbs and learned almost no new language skills.

Anonymous – Hahaha! She makes me feel mediocre just looking at her! Biatch!

Also look for Anthony Bourdain’s show that aired last week about Spain. It was the most civil and gracious show he has ever done.

She is insufferable. Anyone who refers to non-celebs as “pedestrians” should be shot.

While I used to find her insufferable she’s grown on me over the years. I think she means well but just comes across as aloof. And she’s one of the few celebs that doesn’t make herself look like a barbie doll with tons of plastic surgery and botox so on that count I salute her.

Yes there is something she cannot do….ACT.

    P.S.

If you are seriously interested in Spanish cooking, check out any book by Penelope Casas. A serious and incredible cook.

All this Gwyneth bashing! I actually think she is fabulous. She is an unconventional beauty who has made it in an industry without getting a boob job and keeps her private family life private. She is a strong, successful woman and personally I admire her.

The Gwyenth bashing is legitimate; there are right ways and wrong ways to ‘be’ an expat, and she ain’t got it – a total snob. When I think of the brilliant Americans through the years who are lucky enough to live across the continent, I do not think of this little brat.

I love most PBS programing, but I will most likely avoid watching this show because of her.

Marie Louise, “a strong successful women”?? No dear, Angelina Jolie is a strong successful woman. her range as an actress is infinitely better. She’s active on behalf of children’s causes and has waived most royalties and has them donated to worthy charities, has a career, children and is outspoken on issues about women and a number of other serious matters that plague our world today. If you are a movie goer I would be astounded if you think she deserved an Oscar for her performance instead of Cate Blanchette. That was a sham. Her performance in every film is exactly the same. Sharon Stone once said “Miss Paltrow breathes more rarified air than the rest of us”. I know you must be a sweet prson Marie Louise, just misguided. 🙂

Ok kids, let’s all try to get along. I didn’t post about Gwyneth so everyone could bash her. I’m sure she’s a very lovely person and the show with her and Mario looks like great fun. I will definitely watching if for no other reason than to learn more about Spain and Spanish food.

And CHG, please do not bring up Ms. Jolie’s name here again if you know what’s good for you 😉

    Don’t Hate…appreciate!

Sometimes I think she was put on this planet just to torture me (only because I am totally jealous of her ridiculously perfect existence). Love the clip!

CHG – must a women be international philanthropists in order to warrant any respect? I think anyone who can juggle kids and a full time job is a success. I consider myself one and and that’s really all I have accomplished. As for her Oscar, it’s just an award – she didn’t choose the winner.

Anikasophia – what’s with the “right way” and “wrong way” to be an ex-pat? I lived abroad for ten years and it never occurred to me to question whether I was doing it properly. Like Gwyneth, I was married to a Brit – hence living in London.

Habitually Chic – sorry to be responding on your post – I’m just a bit amazed at the responses. I didn’t realize Gwyneth Paltrow was so disliked. I mean she’s just some actress. I don’t have a particularly decided opinion of her since I don’t know her at all.
Maybe they hate her because she’s rich, beautiful, famous, educated and apparently happy.

Gwyneth Paltrow seems like every rich, pretty, popular, private- school girl I grew up with. They annoyed me then, and annoy me now. That said, I’ll probably watch the show because Spain is a place I have never been and I actually do like Mario.

  18. Jackie August 26, 2008 | 6:45 pm

Gwyneth is not my idea of beautiful, but she’s a decent enough actress. I think the reason she is unpopular is because she has put her foot in her mouth in certain interviews including making negative stereotypes about Americans. I can’t really blame people for being offended.

gwyneth’s spanish accent is amazing (I’m from spain). yes, is there anything she can’t do? I am really excited for this show!

  20. Anonymous September 3, 2008 | 6:57 am

Of course an actress is quick to pick up an authentic sounding accent. And mathletes are great with numbers.

It’s not magic, just something they were born with and are probably grateful for—same as the rest of us. Everybody has a knack for something. And remember the quote (who said it?) “Lives dedicated to beauty seldom end well…”

Beautiful women have much to lose. And lose it they will, just as the woman who has developed her mind and occupation develops her stride.

oh i love gwynnie! wonder if we’ll get it here… have you heard about her new website – goop? some are touting her the next martha (!). Think she’ll put her interior-design encyclopedic self (remember house & garden?) to good use!?!
