UPDATED FOR FALL 2024: I posted this in May because we were having a cooler than usual spring. Joke was on us because we’ve been dying in more 90 degree days than I’ve ever experienced in my life. I’m reposting with updates since everyone else is now posting about fields jackets and barn coats. I went through every jacket to make sure they were still in stock and updated with new links and some fabulous new jackets that are out now for fall. If you snoozed on these in spring, now is your second chance to grab one.

FROM MAY 2024: I know some of you are going to be mad about this post. You are waiting for more summer fashion posts, I get it, but it’s been so chilly and grey in NYC and according to my West Coast friends, Los Angeles. My double faced wool coats and even my Toteme Trench are too heavy for 60-65 degrees so I’ve been trying to find some lighter jacket options. I’m also headed to Nantucket soon where it will be even colder so I need something for that trip too.

I saw a photo of Dakota Johnson, who’s in town filming a new movie, wearing a quilted jacket and white jeans. The perfect chilly spring day outfit. Funny enough, Gwyneth Paltrow who used to be married to Chris Martin who Dakota is now dating, wore a similar quilted jacket in the film Possession. I figured out Dakota’s quilted jacket was vintage Hermès from the Margiela years in the 90s and was lucky to find one in my size on a men’s resale site in the UK. It arrived today and it fits perfectly so I think it was mistakenly assumed to be a men’s jacket when it was really for women. I posted a few others I found on Vestiaire in my Instagram stories but I think they’ve sold out so I found some new options. If you are also in need of a jacket for cold mornings or a trip to the beach for Memorial Day weekend where it hasn’t warmed up yet, these are the best choices.

UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2024: Some of the vintage Hermès quilted jackets from the 90s I found online now are selling for a lot more than I paid in May but there are a few in the reasonable price range. I think Hermès used to call them paddock jackets and I found cream, stone, dark tan, drab green, drab brown, brown, mustard, brunt orange, red, green, blue, and black.

Check the dimensions listed and compare the size conversion from French to US sizing. You may also have to deduct if a jacket they have listed as men’s is really for women.

This L.L.Bean Quilted Riding Jacket is a similar style to my new Hermès jacket but it’s lined so it will be for colder mornings and days. It comes in five colors in regular sizes and six colors in petite and is currently on sale.

Toteme really leaned into all the different jacket types this spring and this Quilted Single-breasted Cotton Jacket is a chic update on the classic quilted coat. It’s currently on sale too. You can find more smaller sizes here.

Also from Toteme is this chic Oversized Quilted Jacket. They are all great to style with white jeans to lighten them up for spring. This is most similar to the vintage Hermès jacket I bought myself. Double check the dimensions and sizing since it’s an overized fit. You will probably be able to size down one to two sizes.

Another classic style is this Diamond Quilted Jacket.

This Toteme Leather-trimmed Cotton Jacket is a very chic version of the classic barn jacket. This style runs large so you may want to check the dimensions and size down one to two sizes. It’s currently 30% off with an additional 20% off with the code MYEXTRA20.

You can find extra small and small sizes here. For those of you who don’t know 24S is the online site for Le Bon Marché. It stands for their address at 24 rue de Sèvres and is obviously, very reputable.

You can also go classic with this Barbour Corduroy-trimmed Coated-cotton Jacket. This ivory color is sold out but it is still available in the arm green color.

If you want a more fashion forward option, try this Cropped Barn Jacket. This one is still available and on sale now.

The all-time classic is the original J.Crew Barn Jacket from 1983 that has been reissued. It’s for men but you can steal the style by sizing down.

You know this look is hot when The Row has designed their own Corduroy Collar Jacket. This one is mostly sold out now but you can find a few more sizes here, here, here, and here.

This Quilted Corduroy Collar Coat is a slight update on the classic barn jacket.

This Garment Dyed Cotton Jacket is new for fall.

This Barn Jacket also comes in black but I think the neutral colors work best for these jackets.

I had a different Prada jacket here in May but it’s sold out now. This Prada Tweed Field Coat is very expensive but if money were no object, this is the one I would buy. It’s so chic!

Also this Prada Light Re-Nylon Jacket has a few sizes left if you’re feeling fancy.

This army green Flex Utility Jacket comes in a few colors and is good for those of you in warmer locals where it stays warm longer. I bought a similar green one from Banana Republic but it’s since sold out.

I was about to say that I think waxed cotton jackets are better for the country than the city when I read that this one is named the Country Jacket.
