Marvelous Merchant Ivory Mansion

I absolutely love Merchant Ivory films so it’s not surprising that I would love the home that the duo shared in Hudson, New York. They bought the 1805 Federal 19-room home built for Jacob Rutsen Van Rensselaerin 1975 for about $105,000. It’s filled with furniture and mementos from Merchant Ivory films such as Jefferson in Paris and The Europeans and according to T magazine, lacks proper heat or air conditioning. The home is a little more quiet since Ismail Merchant died in 2005 but the 87-year-old James Ivory said, ‘‘I walk in here after the ride from the city, and I’m happy.’’ We should all be so lucky.
