Golden Globes 2013 Recap

There were a few themes of the 2013 Golden Globes: the flu, post-baby bodies, and odes to Angie’s right leg.  The popular colors ranges from red to black and lots of blush.  There really wasn’t anyone who stole the show but here are a few of my favorites.
Jennifer Lawrence won for Silver Linings Playbook while suffering from the flu.  She gave a great speech but the top of her Dior Haute Couture dress was a little weird.
Claire Danes had a baby less than a month ago and has a flatter tummy than I will ever have in my entire life. Sigh.  She also won for Homeland which means that now I really have to sign up for Showtime.

Love Marion Cottilard but I’m on the fence about her Dior dress.  It wasn’t my favorite fashion show for spring 2013 and not my favorites for awards season.  But she could probably wear a paper bag and still look good.

I am bummed I couldn’t find a photo of Jen and Ben.  She looked great in Vivienne Westwood and he won for Argo so take that Oscars.
Naomi Watts looked chic in Zac Posen and was probably warm with those sleeves. It better warm up in LA before my trip next week.

I love Lena Dunham and Girls and was happy that she and the show won Gold Globes.  But there was something about this dress that washed her out and she couldn’t walk in her shoes. She also read her speeches from a prepared paper which was disappointing.  I hope she doesn’t do that again next time.

Taylor Swift wore a similar color Donna Karan gown.  She also needs to work on her “I’m really happy that Adele won the award for best song and I’m not upset at all face”. I also want her to dye her dishwater colored hair a really striking blonde.  And to stop dating boys full stop.

This Oscar de la Renta gown on Jessica Alba was one of the best over all looks of the night.

Amy Adams’ Marchesa dress was a pale ballet pink as she described it to the annoying Ryan Seacrest.  I loved it but her hair was a little weird. I think it would have been pure perfection with Jessica Alba waves.
Megan Fox also recently had a baby.  Biatch. Loved her in this simple Dolce and Gabbana lace gown.

I loved Amanda Seyfried’s Givenchy dress but just wish her hair hadn’t been covering it up.  I also don’t know what was up with the weird gold tie clip thing at the top. I hope she wears bright color to the Oscars.

Oh Jennifer.  She looks great in her Zuhair Murad but I’d like to see her in a different style next time.

Ignore the funny face that Isla Fisher is making in this pic and focus on her pretty Reem Acra dress.  So lovely.

I’m on the fence about Kerry Washington’s Miu Miu dress.  I usually LOVE Kerry’s style and Miu Miu but I’m not a fan of that short under long illusion look.  But she’s another one who could wear a burlap sack and look amazing so I’ll let her slide on this one.

Helen Hunt just continues to age so gracefully and look amazing.  Her Dolce & Gabbana dress was beautiful.

Emily Blunt is so adorable that I want her to be my friend.  She looked like a golden goddess in her lace Michael Kors dress that it’s too bad she didn’t actually win a Golden Globe.

Michelle Dockerty seems to be getting thinner and thinner but still looked chic in her Alexandre Vauthier gold and white gown.

It didn’t photograph well here but Anne Hathaway’s two piece Chanel sparked on screen.  It is also rumored that she is with child which accounts for the loose top.  If she is, she’ll have a really great story of winning a Golden Globe for Les Miserables to tell her child someday.

Kristen Bell is actually confirmed to be pregnant and looked so angelic in her Jenny Packham dress.

There were mixed reviews for Sienna Miller’s Erdem two piece ensemble but she liked that it reminded her of something her character in The Girl would have worn.  She also looks amazing after just having a baby.  There must be something in the water in Hollywood.

I loved the color of Jessica Chastain’s mint colored Calvin Klein dress but the top was a bit too big for her.  Not everyone loved her hair either but she won a Golden Globe for Zero Dark Thirty so I think that trumps what we all think.

As I mentioned, I don’t have Showtime but I do know actress Morena Beccarin is on Homeland. I don’t know the designer but I liked her dress.  But I’m a sucker for any dress with sleeves.

Eva Longoria looked amazing in Pucci but she needed to put her leg back in it.

Same with Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Saint Laurent.  Did they learn nothing from Angie’s right leg jokes?
This Theyskens’ Theory dress on Katherine McPhee looked better on screen and was very sexy.

No designer was mentioned for Zosia Mamet’s dress but it was worth a look.  I loved the mix of materials.
Another new mom, Adele also looked amazing in Burberry in her signature black.  Her song for Skyfall won and she couldn’t have given a better speech.  It made me love her even more!

I loved Kate Hudson’s Alexander McQueen dress and she would have been a contender for best dressed if her hair had been up or didn’t have all those flyaways.  Her hair stylist should be fired for letting her leave the house with them.

Helen Mirren but she just looks better and better and was stunning in Badgley Mischka.  We should all look that amazing in our 70’s.

Co-hosts  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler looked great in L’Wren Scott and Stella McCartney respectively and killed it on stage.  They were cracking everyone up but there just needed to be more of them. Hope they bring them back next year.

Julianne Moore was a winner in Tom Ford and for Game Change.  Now that’s a movie star.

From the top up, Rachel Weisz looked drop dead gorgeous but that illusion Louis Vuitton was a disaster on the bottom.  But she has Daniel Craig on her arm to make up for it.

If anyone needs me on Monday, I’ll be at the movies seeing Silver Linings Playbook and Argo.

Oh, and if I made any grammatical or spelling errors, please keep in mind that this was written at midnight and I’ll fix them in the morning.

Great recap, Heather. Julianne Moore, Helen Mirren and Claire Danes were my favorites. And I agree, everybody needs to keep their legs under their gowns!

Ditto on all of that! Fave was Jessica alba although don’t know what she was doing there cuz she hasn’t been in anything and worst was Rachel weisz

Wow amazing in that I share every one of your sentiments. That normally doesn’t happen on every one! Rachel’s dress and Kerry’s both lost me waist down..what a shame, such promise from the top!

I thought Helens gown was also stunning! Kate H.looks her best yet…and Adele always very classy. The whole right leg reveal is getting comical and just plain ol silly. Did not care for Sienas look and Jessica looked great in the color but it was ill fitting.
A fun night but more disappointments than successes for me.

Helen Hunt’s dress is beautiful but yes what was Rachel Weisz thinking, it looks all of £17 worth. Megan Fox is just too stunning for words well one word then – jealous

I too loved Kate Hudson’s dress, and completely agree about the hair issue.

Taylor, Anne H and Kate H and Zosia. What is with the leg thrown out; please we know you are flawless already. A couple of the dresses I would have picked, except that weren’t fitted properly on top or were a weird design on top of a fabulous skirt!

Hi Heather, Thanks for filling me in on all the fashions from last night…I always know I can count on you for a good recap when I miss a red carpet event on TV.
    All the best,
    Jennifer

Could be wrong, but it seems like I recall Helen Mirren saying her dress was Badgley Mischka. LOVED Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba…worst: Halle Berry (What was she thinking????). And I am SO over overtly sexy gowns, i.e. drop the “Hi, this is my leg,” pose. And the side-boob flash can go:Katherine McPhee, I’m talkin’ to you! And please, for the love of God, will someone just tell J Lo that she is sexy and she doesn’t have to shove it in our faces anymore?!?!?

I agree with everything you wrote! I think Jennifer Garner looked even better on screen. There was something about the way the dress moved that made it very seductive. It needs to be said that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are a POWER couple.

I loved Kerry Washington’s dress! Such a great color with amazing detail. I also was a huge fan of Jessica Alba’s dress and Kate Hudson’s dress.

I adore Anne Hathaway’s short hair now. It looks so chic with her white Chanel.

Adele looked terrific, Jessica Alba in that peach De la Renta was a vision. Jennifer Garner was gorgeous in that red VIvienne Westwood. Great fashion for the most part. 🙂 Great post & recap of the red carpet.

    XOXO

You’re funny! and I’ll be watching Fashion Police tonight for some more comic relief!

Maybe they all got that memo about “lots of color” on the runway and decided to buck the trend…hence all the black!?

    Did love Kate Hudson’s dress.

Love the commentary! In agreement with many of it! I especially love your Megan Fox comment. . . Biatch!

There really must be something in the water.

Thanks for posting and posting as many as you did, more complete than Access Hollywood!

  16. Craig O'Dell January 16, 2013 | 1:21 am

Loved Halle Berry’s Versace gown too!

Love your fashion critique! My favorite was Julianna Moore, so chic and elegant.

You MUST get the first season of Homeland on DVD before watching the current one. It is the best, second only to Downton.

    Enjoy!
