Lauren and Lam
by habituallychic
02 . 02 . 11I came across this old photo of Lauren Bacall crossing a New York street recently. As soon as I saw it, I was immediately reminded of the Derek Lam Spring 2011 collection. If Lauren Bacall was a young woman today, I could easily see her wearing his whole line right down to the shoes. This is especially apparent when you look back at her old style. What do you think?

Derek Lam looks great..love that little white dress, so cute. Lauren was the epitome of understated elegance without having to try very hard..loved her. Great post.
Fabulous! So neat to see how trends change, but always draw from another time 🙂

My name (Laura) was inspired by Lauren Becall. My dad heard a quote of hers “when he’s handing out pearls of wisdom make sure you get a matching pair”.
Such a classic style. I love the pictures you chose for this post.
just love this post so clever – you are very inspiring heather – thanks for writing such a fab blog
Interesting. Yes there is a real nod to Lauren’s old school style but I think the difference is in the fluidity of cut. Old style Lauren’s clothes have more of a tailored feel designed to show off the physique du jour – hourglass. It has a modest but structured sensuality. The modernity of this new collection lies, for me, in its recognition of how women aspire now to a more athletic, less sensual shape and look.
I became aware of this exceptional woman, when I was in high school, she hosted a preview of the 1965 Fall Collections from Paris. My Aunt Marie( the ultimate fairy godmother) invited us to watch this on her new color TV. I was entranced with Paris, Bacall and French Fashion. I began realizing Aunt Marie took Vogue and Harper’s Bizarre. She would ask me to come over to look at the magazines. Then next year she and my mother took us to NYC.
What wonderful memories to think about on such a cold, winter day. Thank you for your wonderful blog!
