The new Spring 2011 ads for Salvatore Ferragamo were just released this week. Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti said this collection was inspired by the 1969 French film La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) and he wanted to portray “that free-spirit, bohemian, gypsy attitude.” I thought it might be fun to continue our warm weather posts with a look at this chic film. It stars Romy Schneider and Alain Delon as a couple spending their August holiday at a villa neat St. Tropez. After her ex, Maurice Ronet, shows up with his daughter played by Jane Birkin, things take a dark turn. As the title suggest, most of the movie revolves around the pool and Romy Schneider’s tan skin and orange lip gloss remind me of an Estee Lauder beauty ad. What’s really amazing is that all of the clothes, except for Alain Delon’s tight swim trunks, are completely timeless. It’s no wonder that fashion designers are inspired by La Piscine. I wish it was warm enough for a dip in the pool today!

Love the new Ferragamo collection – I think Giornetti is doing terrific things there. This is such a great era for chic films. No wonder so many designers channel these pictures and their stars for collections. I have a similar plan for something next week.

I had the biggest crush on Alain Delon when I was a teenager living in Spain, I’m sure I saw this movie sometime in the seventies, don’t remember though. I’ll have to look for it, thanks for sharing this, brings back so many memories!

A classic–the sixties were such a time of expansion and creativity and nobody did it better than the French. Love the green and yellow dress. Mary
A brilliant film. And Romy Schneider’s beauty is at its glowing best here; I don’t think she ever looked better. And she’s in great shape too, long before the let’s-get-physical fitness culture exploded onto the Hollywood and later world scene.

I have been a fan of Romy Schneider since I was a little girl and first saw her in “Sissy”.
Such a beauty, so much sadness.
Thanks for the reminder, have to add it to Netflix for a reviewing. As for the tight swim trunks, only Americans seem to be be appalled.

“La Piscine” is a masterpiece, the characters are tremendously intelligent and Machiavellian. Marianne is unpredictable but she devours hearts, Jean-Paul is a failed writer then Life is non-sense, Harry is the vanity of a brain and a humor almost perfect, Penelope is the perverse girl dressed as an angel… I love this film, absolument inoubliable!
