The Avid Gardener

I was hoping that Vanity Fair would post the Jonathan Becker photos of Bunny Mellon’s gorgeous garden at her Oak Spring estate in Upperville, Virginia and today I was rewarded.  There is something about a garden that immediately makes me wish I could sit in one reading and relaxing all day.  Bunny Mellon has been an avid gardener her whole life and even helped Jackie Kennedy with the White House Rose Garden.  She will turn 100 on August 9, 2010 and I hope she’s letting other do all the gardening so she can sit back enjoy it!

I am so hoping for a Bunny Mellon gardening book. She’s only 100, so maybe she will get around to writing a book.

What a beautiful garden! That arched pergola walkway and the artwork in the garden house are to die for! Inspiration for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Love the little touches throughout! If it were a little cooler here, I’d be inspired to get out in my own yard. Instead, I’ll stay in the A/C and daydream a little 🙂

What an astounding trompe l’œil in the first pictures. I had never seen this room before, thank you!

Scruffy with classic lines. My favorite type of garden.

At a 100 the best gift would be STILL GARDENING.

Hope someone does a book about this precious garden & gardener.

I swooned over those images in VF as well. I cannot wait to one day have the time to create and tend to a beautiful garden.

I do think they could have done a better job on her layout by giving this awesome farm more pages instead of collageing them into such small spaces. She is a true character, the garden absolutely European, albeit English in the shabby way she so likes. It must be wonderful to do exactly as one wishes every day of your life. I applaud her and wish her a happy birthday. xx’s Marsa
