Stripe It Rich

Striped cotton shirts have been around forever but you know that they are seriously hot again when both US Weekly and Vogue devote entire pages to them within weeks of each other. What was funny about the page in Vogue was that it included Pablo Picasso but not Coco Chanel. It is my understanding, after reading two books about the famous designer, that she popularized the striped shirt and sporty clothes during the war at her shop in Deauville, France. Whatever the case, they are now popular with celebrities and fashionistas everywhere. My friend Jessica said that she can’t resist buying them even though she already owns a closet full! Great sources include Saint James, J.Crew, Petit Bateau, L.L. Bean, Lands’ End, Brittany Boutique, and even Top Shop! Anchors Away!

The strips are classic! But how does one pull it off when they are borderline top heavy;a C cup or higher??

they look terrific on these women, an eternal classic-sold as wearable for everyone and then the entire classic is tread upon- going by the wayside with toile, leopard, slipcovers, ballet flats, etc etc.

I was actually going to do a post this week about why I can justify buying several of these striped shirts. Because each one is a little different. This would be more so in defense of the crazy stares I get from my boyfriend when I buy yet another striped shirt. You completely read my mind.

I must admit I have a whole area in my closet for striped T-shirts…all black and white…all different shapes and designs.
I love the look…they just work

Love that vintage Bardot! I also have a fair (read– somewhat excessive) chunk of closet devoted to nautical stripes– different shades of blue, black, red, even yellow (Petit Bateau has a super cute mustard one). Some are Land’s End/LL Bean (thick fabric, great 3/4 sleeve, perfect boatneck, 1/3 the price if St. James), some are vintage, one is an oversized dude’s Russian Navy issue from Ebay… And then, there’s the dress section… and more than a few jackets. I justify it for versatility– throw one on with a pair of cigarette jeans, gold jewelry & a slick red nail, it’s never-fail chic.

Had to tell you that I found an adorable 3/4 sleeve striped tee shirt at Target this weekend. Great find.

I have loved striped shirts forever, but my young daughters always turned up their noses…until this year! Thanks for the post. By the way, I am trying to drum up readership for my new blog and would welcome a visit: http://graciousinteriors.blogspot.com
Now to go shopping for a stripped shirt!

I’ve always been a fan of blue and white striped tops. I’m so glad they are back in style. My French daughter in law who is in the fashion design business was wearing a really cute one the other day and I commented on it and said I wanted to buy one myself. She said I better hurry up because by summer they won’t be in style anymore. I, however, still wear a J Crew blue and white tshirt that I bought 15 years ago. I always feel fashionable in it.

Have you seen the option at J.Crew? They are offering the same one worn by Warhol, Picasso, and Karl Lagerfeld. http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse/Men_Feature_Assortment/NewArrivals/polostees/PRDOVR~26211/26211.jsp

flemmita, try pairing it with a scarf as in one of the photos above. A bolero or cropped jean jacket will also distract the eye and keep you chic.

I own several old St .James models (the same make as the J. Crew offering) and picked up a couple for Mrs. E., too. She recently tried the Lands’ End version and it’s a winner.
