What’s black and white…

by habituallychic

Someone recently told me that they asked a child, “what’s black and white and read all over?” and they had no idea. I guess kids don’t read the newspaper these days. For some reason, I thought about that story when I saw this black and white papered entry. Probably because I also can’t answer the question of who designed it or where it’s from. Some of the motifs are similar to things I’ve seen at the Neue Galerie so it might be Austrian or German or who knows, maybe it’s in California. If anyone can identify it, please let us know. Until then, I’ll be reading the news on the internet like the kids!

I just said “Woah!” out loud when I saw that staircase… so gorgeous. And I love the color blue in the last photos. I really love it all. Great find!

I’m working on a really similar color scheme in my Master Bedroom ( http://tearinguphouses.blogspot.com/2010/01/before-progress-historic-house-by-water_27.html ). We’re painting it Antique Gray and layering it with dark woods and heavy black and white fabrics.

These photos provide tons of inspiration!

Definitely inspired by or a refurbishment of a Weiner Werkstatte interior. Either way, it is very well done. Thank you for posting it. It looks a lot like Josef Hoffman’s work.

OK, I think we can definitely rule out California. Wherever it is, it’s wonderful. I love the fluid grace of the stairs behind the rigid, portcullis-like railings of the arch.

There are so many wonderful aspects to each room that I don’t know where to begin – the staircase, the door, the cabinetry in the dining room… all just stunning.

Heather, I think it maybe one of twp. Austrian/ Klimt (ms) Or William Morris?! What I do know it is such a delight to finally see a beautiful home done in black, white and BLUE. Terribly refreshing & quite chic.
    Great post.

That first picture with the wallpapered entry is fabulous! It made me think of the awesome black and white wallpaper in Sarah Richardson’s guest room: http://www.sarahrichardsondesign.com/portfolio/project/sarahs-house2/guest-suite1. I would love to really go to town with bold black and white and pops of color.
