Architect Gil Schafer‘s apartment in the West Village mixes orange and black but there is nothing scary about it! In fact, the burnt orange pumpkin color of the living room walls mixed with the espresso wool felt upholstered gallery walls and black scagliola mantle is positively divine! And then there are the Ionic columns and classical details that add to it’s appeal and has me swooning. After he renovated the space, Mr. Schafer had a little help decorating it from his friend Miles Redd. Neither of them can do any wrong in my book and when I need an architect for my own home someday, I definitely know the first person I am going to call! Until then, these images are going into my orange wall color file! It’s perfect!

I loved his house the first time I saw it years ago before I even knew who Miles Redd was, let alone that he was partly responsible for those beautiful rooms. The colours are divine.
So warm and inviting. I love the bronze, orangery, rusty reds , Miles Redd is a favorite. A house becomes a home!
Great post. Always love anything on Miles Redd. Choosing that right shade of orange is a skill.
I’ve always liked this place but a lot of these photos are new to me, as is the plan, which is, to me, the most instructive part, because it shows shows how much can be squeezed into cramped quarters, and how the results can be unfailingly elegant. If I had a choice between this place & the bloated new house that I recently saw out in one of our western suburds–“And this is our gift–wrapping room!”–I’d take this beauty any day. Not, of course, that anybody’s offered me either one.

Gil + Miles = dynamite!
I had not seen these photos, but love that deep, spicey orange, and have used it twice w/ huge success. Once in Oxford, Mississippi, in a guest room. I used various shades of white and cream w/ pumpkin walls and an old brass bed. Then a bachelor pad in Manhatten, I mixed “Hermes orange” with midnight blue and lot’s of old pub fixtures. Totally different look – same great color. Thanks for sharing!
