Kelly Wearstler at Home

Christian May of Maison21 was the first person last week to guess that it is Ms. Wearstler’s home that is featured in the new October 2009 issue of Vogue so he gets a gold star. Today I just noticed that Vogue.com has posted a few photos from Francois Halard that never made it into the magazine. Some rooms are a little more brown than I was expecting but I wonder how much of that was original to the home which was designed by architect James Dolena in the 1930’s. The house was previously owned by many Hollywood actors as well as Cubby Brocolli, the James Bond producer.

I was just talking to a friend about Kelly Wearstler last night. We both agreed that she seems to take more risks in her own homes than she does for her clients and that not everyone seems to get it. As I always say, there is no right or wrong in decorating and I applaud her for thinking outside the box. If we all had the same style, the world would be a very boring place!

    Heather,
This is unbelievable, you can read minds!
An hour before I saw your post I was reading an email from an interior designer from Switserland who contacted me to ask some information about my company. And she wrote that she likes the style of Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler. So I wrote on my agenda that the first thing to do tomorrow was googling Kelly Wearstler to know some more about her work! And what was I reading about visiting your blog tonight?? Indeed …

    Unbelievable isn’t it?

Oh and I love the style of Kelly!!

I’ve been a huge fan of Kelly for a long while, some of her stuff is a bit off the wall even for my eclectic tastes, but most of it is absolutely stunning. I love the way she mixes textures and colors—always so vibrant. The woman loves to make a statement and I love to watch : ) Thanks for sharing these unseen images!!

Good Golly, I really think KW is my all, all time favorite! If I won the lottery, she would be designing my home.

Fantastic…I can’t wait to pick up a copy…and for her new book – thanks for the preview!
I know there are a lot of people ou there who don’t like her work…but I also love that she takes risks, an doesn’t repeat herself. There are a lot of lessons to be learned by observing what she does…even if you don’t take all of it away with you.

I honestly cannot tell which picture I like the least. Every room is riddled with gold and brass and more gold. And what’s with the table top? It’s a dining table, not a coffee table. There should be some reason to design, even when taking risks or being innovative. Someone please explain the obsession with her work, because I’ve looked and looked and still don’t get it.

Totally agree with you. I think her homes look very good – not everything is my style but it’s very joyful. She tries things, and there is a beautiful mix.
For her clients, she gets more gimmicky… Not that far from actual bad taste sometimes…
Still she remains a true original, something you don’t find that much nowadays among interior designers.

Lovely to look at, like a museum, though I would be afraid to live in it – and esp. with my two small children: Crash! Snap! Oooopps! Sorry, Mama…

    Nope, not for me.

I dont get it. I usually adore her taste, but I just find this weird. Does she have to move all those heavy busts if she ever wants to use any of those tables? The master bedroom is so NOT my style. I dunno…. That entryway…. Not buyin’ it.

Not a fan. I love the spirit, not the execution. I showed him a KW spread from one of my magazines, and he just shook his head. LOL I’m with you in that I do appreciate that not everything is for everyone. Cheers! xoxo

I’m the reverse of a lot of the commentators here- I’m usually pretty bored by her designs for other clients and hotels.

But I have to say, I LOVED her home in Vogue this month. Risky, eclectic, and not so… excessively polished, in the way that a lot of her other work is. Pleasant surprise.

Extraordinarily over the top in the best Hollywood fashion, a total thumbs up, had not seen the coverage yet! Was at the Tides in South Beach recently and was knocked out(in a good way). Her work is so out of my aesthetic zone personally but in all honesty, I may rethink much of that. There is always a place for this kind of theatricality, so much of it exists in London and Paris, its about time it infiltrated these shores. Brava.

I’m absolutely obsessed with KW! For those who think “she would have to move all those busts”: don’t they understand that shots like this merely serve as a “moment” or “a vignette”? It’s not telling you that that’s what she lives with everyday, it merely says she adores beautiful, sculptural objects, and knows how to display and photograph them. They are the runways of the interior design world. Not meant for the everyday, but meant to inspire.
I’m sure the way she accessorizes her house changes daily. I would give my left arm to go shopping with KW any day!!!!
