J.Crew’s Artistic Genius
by habituallychic
09 . 23 . 09I am loving the new J.Crew catalog that features seven New York artists photographed wearing J.Crew clothing in their studios! The online version, Open Studio, has interviews with all the artists and more shots artwork and studios. My favorite question of course is “How do you think art and fashion influence one another?” Their answers are all perfect. I have two questions of my own though, 1. Why didn’t they shoot any women artists? and 2. Is artist Chris Dorland (above) single?

J. Crew is fantastic! I love their styling.
I was wondering the same thing—why no female artists? Hmmmm, maybe next time… Did enjoy the catalog though—stunning as usual.

Hmmm, as a regular female artist, I agree with Shazam.
Okay, I love seeing the guys and their studios, women artists next please!!
Enjoyed the art and the clothing, we do not have J.Crew in Canada yet, pitty
Funny – I did a J.Crew post today, as well! I think most of the blogging community has an unhealthy obsession with that store. Or is that just me? Hah.
Anyway, I am bummed because that catalogue must have been an East Coast-only distribution. I never saw it here in Chicago, and I get a fair number of J.Crew catalogues in my mailbox. Thanks for sharing, because that really is a brilliant idea for a photo shoot.
It’d be great to do a “successful women of NYC” – not just artists – female-only catalogue. What a hit that would be!
Because J Crew does not need to vamp up its women’s line. The men’s is what needs help and this was a smart way to do it.
I too believe in the intersections between fashion, art and interiors. I love that J. Crew is using that concept to showcase fashion on real bodies in their natural environments of the artists. I would have liked to see modern women artists showcased in addition to the men.

I just wish they would put Matthew Barney back in the catalog. He’s one fine-art piece of ass.
Well- it’s the men’s catalog, isn’t it? Isn’t that why there are no women?
If you are talking about the catalog I’m thinking of — not enough info provided, my answer to you is: because it’s a “men’s shop” catalog. Besides, J.Crew’s brick and mortar stores cater enough to women. It’s time for the men to receive some attention, and if this means in the way of men designers, I’m all for it. 🙂
OMG what a great idea! Well done J. Crew!
Wow, lovely images! Thanks for sharing!!
Have a lovely evening!

J. Crew makes it all look so easy.
A set of women artists would have been the perfect compliment!

i LOVE jcrew and have always LOVED jcrew.
Loved this idea too. I hope they’re working on the female version!
So true! Why the hell didn’t they publish women artists??
I consider myself quite observant when it comes to “oversights” like this, but even I didn’t notice until you made the remark.
