Habitually Chic Designer: Thom Filicia

My post about Nate Berkus had me thinking about my other favorite TV makeover marvel Thom Filicia. With all that charitable work helping straight men clean up their acts, it’s easy to forget that he is a real interior designer with a fabulous portfolio behind him. And speaking of behinds, he was also the miracle worker behind Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s Long Island home, seen above and in the next four photos below from the premier issue of Vogue Living.

In the living room above, Marc Anthony’s antiques hold court of the shelves in front of recamier sofas custom designed by Thom Filicia Inc., while the white lacquer bench, ebonized Lelau tables and mirror are from Holly Hunt.

Filicia said the home which was originally Anthony’s retreat was a challenge because he wanted it to feel comfortable yet represent their personalities which are very different. She’s obviously glamorous and he’s a bit of a bohemian, as are a lot of musicians. But Lopez said she “can appreciate the bohemian side, and he also can appreciates glamorous things, so it was easy for us to meld.

In the glamorous yet comfortable silver papered dining room, the table is Fernworks Antiques, in Los Angeles and the wingback chairs are from C. J. Peters in New York. On the original mantle sit candlesticks from Aero Studios and mercury globes from Paula Rubenstein. The convex mirror is from Sentimento Antiques in New York. The silvered wall covering is from Roger Arlington.

All in all, I think it looks like a lovely home. I just wonder how they are going to baby proof it now! Below are more images from Tom Filicia’s portfolio.

wow, his style is lovely but much more formal than i would have expected….

Oooh, very chic. I love Marc Anthony and JLo’s place and Thom’s style is much more sophisticated than I would have gathered from Queer Eye! I love that box chandelier (in the first pic)…do you know where that’s from?
Love your blog by the way (as a fellow interior designer 🙂 )

The pictures captioned “Upper East Side Residence” are actually pics of a showhouse room he did in NYC a few years ago.

“Speaking of behinds”…ha! I love it! I remember seeing this editorial and thinking to myself how underrated Thom Filicia is as a designer. I love his style. Also-I noticed that the interesting light fixture in the entry of the Lopez-Anthony home is the same as the one in the living room pictured in the second “Upper Eastside Residence” photo you posted from Thom’s portfolio:-)

HC – I’m a bit of a fan of Thom too. He really is a very talented designer, and I absolutely adore the home he created for JLo and hubby.

oh the door and door hardware in the first photo is divine. i’d take that door over a new sofa any day.

Joanna, You have to remember that these interiors were for paying clients and also showhouses. That are much more elegant since he probably had a much larger budget than on Queer Eye or Dress My Nest.

JLC Studio, The light fixture was custom designed from Grant Larkin. Their website isn’t up and running yet but they are based in Pittsfield, MA if you need to reach them. Everyone loved that fixture so much that I think I am going to have to contact them for a later post.

An Aethete’s Lament, thanks for the heads up. I thought that room was from the Showhouse but it was listed under residential projects on his website so I went with that.

So Haute, I couldn’t resist the pun! The light fixture is from Grant Larkin.

You bring up an interesting point about using the same fixture in different interiors. A lot of designers use the same vendors from job to job because they know they can count on them and they also like their wares. Also, a client might see it in their porfolio and want to use it. Designers are sometimes too busy to reinvent the wheel for every project if you know what I mean.

Suzy, I also love the Jlo/Marc Anthony home. It is one of my favorites and is on my list of homes I would feel comfortable moving into as is!

Habitually, I remember that the showhouse was Kips Bay, in a vile house wherein all the architectural elements had been ripped, leaving only bare, plain, ugly, featureless rooms that had about all the charm of squash courts. I remember stepping into TF’s room and absolutely loving it.

  13. Pink Wallpaper February 27, 2008 | 3:16 pm

i love him too and i adore the lighting he used in that first pic…i can’t find where its from.

  14. Habitually Chic February 27, 2008 | 3:21 pm

An Aethete’s Lament, I love Thom’s use of layers and by that I mean different tones and textures of the same color, and his great use of art. He has an amazing eye for detail but I think we already knew he was a genius after seeing how he transorms digusting bachelor pads on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy!

  15. Habitually Chic February 27, 2008 | 3:23 pm

Pink Wallpaper, The light fixture is from Grant Larkin based in MA. I only found an address and phone number but no one answered. Their website is not up yet. I’ll post more information when I find it!

His tones and textures are what impress me most. His neutral rooms are anything but bland. And who knew I could ever covet anything in J. Lo’s home?

    Great photos!

  17. Habitually Chic February 27, 2008 | 5:58 pm

BA, I agree that his rooms are anything but bland. I like that there is just enough sparkle or interest in each room to catch your eye but not tire it.

I remember seeing glancing over JLo’s home in Vogue Living and thinking it was nice so it’s funny how much I liked it when I saw it again. I think my style is growing up!

  18. LondonCalling February 27, 2008 | 7:52 pm

I noticed the similar fixture as well. It’s such a standout piece. Love these rooms. Thom is very talented.

London Calling, a future post about the designer of the light fixture is in the works. Check back soon!

The giant tusks in the Greystone Estate Living Room are amazing! Love the post and the blog…you are a daily read for me.

though his rooms a bit too formal for me, i really like him as a person (from what i’ve seen on tv) and can appreciate his sense of style.

and speaking of behinds…i just can’t get behind that eagle table that he seems to be so fond of…it’s too “Heart of ‘Murica” to me, eek!

  22. Habitually Chic February 27, 2008 | 9:49 pm

Thanks Nicole! It’s always nice to get postive feedback!

  23. Easy and Elegant Life February 28, 2008 | 3:36 pm

Silver papered walls in the dining room! I didn’t think that it would work in a larger space. It’s very glamourous. Mrs. E and I are trying to figure out how to use a metallic in our home, figuring it for a ceiling. But maybe this is the answer! Thanks.

Sigh. I just love his work.:)

I love his work…so beautiful! I am dying to know where I can get the fabric for the pillows and sofa featured in the Hamptons Showhouse. Anyone know?
