Margaret Russell is new Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest!
by habituallychic
08 . 05 . 10We finally have the announcement that we’ve been waiting months to hear! Margaret “Peggy” Russell is leaving Elle Decor to become the Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest! I think this means that we won’t be seeing Cher or Michael Jackson on the cover ever again! Woo hoo! Congratulations Peggy! Now we just have to wait to hear who’s taking over Elle Decor!
UPDATE: Word has it that Michael Boodro, the current executive editor, will be the interim editor at Elle Decor. As everyone has pointed out, the magazine musical chairs has shaken things up and I hope this means that some of our favorite magazines will now be around for years to come!

shock! Don’t mess with Elle Decor! Dara Caponigro would have been a good replacement, but now she’s at Veranda, which I have yet to see. Maybe someone from Domino will take over ED?
Just spent the week end with friends from Elle Decors and we were all waiting to hear Margaret’s decision.
Big change on her part but I believe she really fits the profile to breath some life in Arch. Digest!!
WOW! that is news! I sure hope she can revive AD!!! well… I KNOW she can!! It will be interesting to see who replaces her at ED… mmmmmmmm….. I guess you’re on it Heather and you’ll let us all know!
🙂
This news is HUGE… like most everyone else, I hope that she can breath new life into it so that it once again has some relevance… ~Terri
thank. god.
though you gotta give that ol’ broad credit; seems like every other time I picked up the mag, her editor’s page was focused on calling out rich clients who skipped out on their designer bills. An epidemic in the industry, I’ve heard.
I thought that was cool.
I kind of can’t believe it. Was that expected? I so enjoy her monthly write ups in Elle Decor. Who so ever is to follow has some big high heels to fill!
maybe no more Cher on the cover, but i’m sure we’ll get plenty of large branches and hydrangeas! haha!
Love all the “stir-ups” that are going on in magland…A.D. is in for a treat, and so are we! 🙂
Can’t wait. I may actually subscribe to AD again after my hiatus. And, Dara’s first issue of VERANDA is spectacular!!
WOO HOO!!! This is the best news I’ve heard in a LOOOONG time. When does she start??
I’m very excited about this appointment! I think a subscription to ArchDigest is in my future.
Now I can stop looking nostalgically at AD and actually buy the magazine knowing that I will love whatever is inside and not be bored to tears. I’m excited about the energy that has been pumped into my remaining favorite magazine over the past few months. This is not to say that I have finished morning the loss of both House & Garden and Domino. They were at opposite ends of the spectrum, but both still need to have a voice.
It will be fascinating to see the changes!!!! I am excited. Thanks for the info!
Oh interesting, I love her she writes the best editor’s letters, I’m in UK but order American Elle Decor every month – it’ so different for the British one
Fabulous! I once saw her at the International Builders’ Show. Ever thought her leg was in a walking cast, girl still had on a fabulous black work dress and a high heal. She is awesome!

So, so happy for Peggy! I predicted this one months ago. I am intrigued to see what Anita Sarsidi does. She is an amazing talent and is a powerhouse, with a discerning eye as well. Will she join Peggy at AD or become Elle Decors’ Editor in Chief?
She’s certainly proven she’s got the creative stock for it.
ED was Peggy’s baby. No doubt she has a voice in who continues to ‘rock it to sleep’.
It’s so exciting!
Very interesting! I haven’t bought an issue of AD in years & years. I very rarely go through copies that do come my way –and I tend to read shelter mags of all different styles. AD was always such a yawn.
Looks like there’s big chance I’ll be picking one up someday soon. I’m curious what Margaret Russell will do with AD. I’m sure it won’t (& it doesn’t need to be) a clone of Elle Decor. I’m standing by…
Elle Decor has a good thing going on, so I hope that doesn’t get messed up as it inevitably evolves.
this totally shakes up my subscriptions. Im still waiting to see if I should subscibe to T & C for Stephen Drucker–his first issue was nice but one Mile’s REdd feature is not enough to entice me. And to think, I may add AD and Veranda!! This editor shake up is going to be expensive but its worth it for the magazines to survive.
Why not bring Dominique Browning back too? Mayer Rus?
Can’t wait for Margaret’s first issue!!! Although I am an AD subscriber I have very rarely been inspired. The Italian and German editions have alwaysbeen great on the other hand. So a fresh new perspective for the US will be much welcomed.
So curious of who will take the helm at Elle Decor and if that change will effect the look and feel of the magazine.
Cheers,
Claudia
Good news, I will buy American AD again, not just European versions (my favorites: the Italian and the German ones). Elle Decor? I hope it will continue on Russell’s path.
Heather, what wonderful news…Me thinks, you are soooooo happy. I couldn’t stop laughing when I read…”No more Michael or Cher.” Amen! The best to MR. Can’t wait to see what life she will bring back into AD. Thank you so for sharing this with all of us, today.
I’m very excited about this appointment! I think a subscription to ArchDigest is in my future.
More MJ covers would mean he’s back, and he finally hired Kelly Wearstler, or another equally talented designer, who is not prone to overdone gilt furniture, and not guilty of hysterical ranch design. Both would be big news, indeed, and AD worthy.
I’m not sure I approve of Architectural Digest getting a new Editor-in-Chief. For years Architectural Digest has been so mediocre it’s made me feel GREAT about my own house. With Peggy at the helm … I’ll be back to feeling disgusted with my decor. LOL. ~ karen

I’m nervous and scared and excited all at once! I’m brimming with emotion!
