And Now For Some Good News

Broadway in Soho is quickly becoming the new shopping destination for home design. CB2 opens today at 451 Broadway and is only the third store in the US for the lesser priced modern design off-shoot of Crate and Barrel.

While on November 16th, Muji finally opens it’s first US store at 455 Broadway at exactly 12 noon with over 3,200 square feet of retail space and more than 2,000 products for sale including housewares, fabric, furniture, appliances, apparel and more. I can already envision a line out the door to buy their minimalist designed products.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that both of these stores are moving in right down the street from the original reasonably priced design mecca, Pearl River Mart. If you’ve never been to Pearl River Mart, you don’t know what you are missing. I can’t go there without buying something fun. It’s a fabulous place to buy gifts. They carry a wide array of Asian tableware in a myriad of patterns and styles but also have a great selection of plain white tableware downstairs that are perfect for parties or just those who want simple dishes at a great price. If you are in need of a Buddha, some foo dogs, even chopsticks, this is the place to go.

As excited as I am for CB2 and especially Muji, I really hope they don’t force out stores like Pearl River Mart. They are what make New York so unique and exciting!

Agreed on Pearl River Mart! Their wares are so distinct to Crate and Barrell though – surely there’s enough room for all of us!

It’s interesting new houseware/design stores are being launched when the housing market is in the doldrums and the consumer is expected to spend less on lifestyle goods.

Alice, it will be interesting to see how the new stores fare. Obviously, they were planned more than a year ago and probably had no idea what the market would be now. In NYC, it seems like everyone is still spending like there is no tomorrow. These stores will probably do well since they have reasonable prices and they are new to the US market.

I can honestly say, that when I lived in Tokyo most of our apartment AND our clothing came from Muji…sad, I know, but in a very expensive city where its hard to get foreinger-friendly sized clothes, Muji is a god send. Their stationery is amazing, and they do great homewares etc. Happy shopping!

Love Muji from my days in the UK. Also love Pearl River from the old days upstairs on Canal Street, where you had to hunt for the right doorway. Will be in NYC in a few weeks, and we’ve already got plans to check out the new CB2 store.

Suzy, I am familiar with Muji’s housewares but not their apparel. I look forward to checking it out, as well as the stationery!

Fairfax, I remember going to Pearl River on Canal Street too! It was actually kind of scary and very dirty. It’s amazing how different and clean the new store it. I love it!

I’m bummed Muji did not decide to open first in Los Angeles, but hey here’s some good news. You have to check this out:

Some of their clothing is pretty plain, as with most of their merchandise (Muji actually means plain in Japanese), but I’ve noticed the clothing range was better in Japan than elsewhere…we have Muji in HK too, but it’s a little disappointing. They do great knitwear etc. The stationery is fab…

Thanks CLFan, I saw that. I wonder if A Fashionable Life has any chance of becoming a monthly magazine. I love the design features in Bazaar and actually enjoy the magazine more than Vogue right now. A Fashionable Life could definitely give Vogue Living a run for it’s money!

Suzy, I can’t wait to check out Muji and report back!
