Love in the Time of Cholera

I buy a lot of books that I start but get too busy to finish, such was the case with Love in the Time of Cholera. But now, I am determined to finish it before the movie version comes out on November 16th! It looks so beautiful! I can’t wait to see it!

The movie is based on the acclaimed book by the Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez and tells the epic love story of a man who waits fifty years for the love of his life amid the lush, romantic backdrop of early 20th century South America.

It was adapted for the screen by Academy Award winner Ronald Harwood (‘The Pianist’) and directed by Mike Newell (‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’). It stars Academy-award nominated Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, and Benjamin Bratt. Colombian-born, international recording artist Shakira has even contributed songs for the movie and soundtrack. If this talented group of people can’t put together an amazing movie, I don’t know who can! But don’t forget to start with the book!

Looks fabulous! I recently watched The Painted Veil, which seems in the same genre as LITTOC. Loved it.

I love Giovanna Mezzogiorno – did you see Facing Windows? Oh my lord, I sobbed my heart out in that movie, especially the last scene; a monologue by Giovanna and a close up of her face with that hauntingly beautiful song in the background. (Reminds me to dig out that DVD.)

I also loved The Painted Veil and will be looking out for Love in the Time of Cholera.

For two years now, LITTOC has sat on my nightstand, patiently waiting for me to pick it up and finish it. It is a lovely book (from what I’ve read) and I know it will be a gorgeous movie – I don’t think I can wait to see it. Speaking of gorgeous, the costumes in Elizabeth were so sumptuous I could hardly focus on the plot! A true masterpiece.

I totally forgot about this until you mentioned it. Yeay! I am so excited.

That book (and of of his books) has always sounded so intimidating to be, but I might have to just give it a try. I’m sure the movie will be gorgeous.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I hadn’t heard that a movie was in the works, how exciting! Definitely finish the book before you see the film. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has such a beautiful way of telling this story,I think it is good to have your own vision of it before you see someone else’s.

Hi, I’ve been following your blog and enjoy your posts. Makes me nostalgic for living in NYC…

So excited that you mentioned the LITTOC book and movie. My husband and I are looking forward to seeing the movie (he is a huge GGM fan and gave me a first edition of LITTOC when we were dating). The book was fantastic and if the scenes you posted are any indication, it looks like the movie will be, too!

I also have yet to finish LITTOC. I began reading it a few years ago, in an attempt to read more Colombian literature (my family is from Colombia). I’m so excited about the movie! I didnt even know it was being made into film. Now I definately have to finish the book. thanks for sharing!
    ps. i love your blog!

Sorry I haven’t responded I have been a little under the weather this week. So this is for everyone.

I’m so glad that so many people have either read the book or are planning to. I started it again and it really is a lovely story with also a sense of humor. I’m not surprised that many of you haven’t heard about the movie version. There really doesn’t seem to be that much buzz which is a shame. It looks so beautiful. But I guess if it’s not a big budget action flick, it doesn’t get much hoopla.

other trailers have made their way online, and this one features shakira’s song she recorded for this movie.. apperently, Gabriel marquez is such a fan of shakira and personally make some music for this film adaption.. and from what i hear, its beautiful! her voice enchants me.
